Questions to Ask Your Partner When You Want to Know Them Even Better

Being in a relationship with someone gives us an opportunity to continue getting to know them even better.

People change. Their priorities change. Their dreams change. Even the little things that make them feel loved can change over time.

Sometimes, you can be with someone for years and still discover something about them that you never knew.

That's part of what makes a relationship interesting.

If you want to know your partner even better, asking the right questions can create conversations that go beyond what happened at work today or what you're doing this weekend.

Here are five questions to ask when you want to keep learning about the person you're already sharing your life with.

1. What do you think makes our relationship work?

Every relationship has its own rhythm.

Maybe you communicate well. Maybe you make each other laugh. Maybe you've learned how to give each other space when you need it. Maybe there's a level of trust that makes it easier to get through difficult moments together.

Your answer may not be the same as theirs, and that's part of what makes this question interesting.

You may discover that something you barely think about is actually one of the things they value most about your relationship.

It's also a good reminder to notice what's working, not just what needs attention.

2. What specifically makes you feel loved?

Most people know they want to feel loved, but that doesn't always mean they experience love in the same way.

For one person, it might be affection. For another, it's having someone listen when they've had a difficult day. It might be quality time, thoughtful gestures, words of encouragement, or simply knowing that someone is there when they need them.

Asking your partner gives them a chance to tell you what actually matters to them instead of expecting you to figure it out.

And sometimes the answer changes as life changes.

3. What’s something you’re working on emotionally that I may not realize?

Even when you're close to someone, you don't always know what they're carrying internally.

Your partner may be working through something they never really talked about, trying to change an old pattern, learning how to handle stress differently, or simply figuring out something about themselves.

This question creates space for that conversation without assuming that something is wrong.

It also gives you an opportunity to understand them as a person, not just as your partner.

Sometimes knowing what someone is working through helps you understand their reactions, their needs, and even parts of their personality that didn't always make sense before.

4. What do you love about the way we spend time together?

A lot of connection happens in the ordinary parts of life, watching a show together, running errands, cooking dinner, taking a walk, sitting around talking, or doing absolutely nothing.

Your partner may have a favorite part of your time together that you never realized was important to them.

Maybe it's the conversations you have late at night. Maybe it's laughing about something nobody else would find funny. Maybe it's simply feeling comfortable enough to sit in the same room without having to entertain each other.

This question can help you notice the everyday things that make your relationship feel special.

5. How do you want to grow as a partner over the next 6 months?

Knowing who your partner is today is important.

Knowing who they're becoming is another part of truly knowing them.

Maybe they want to communicate better. Maybe they want to be more patient, more affectionate, more present, or better at expressing what they need.

Their answer might even have nothing to do with a problem in the relationship. Personal growth can simply be about becoming more of the person they want to be.

And when you ask this question, you can answer it too.

You might discover that you both want to grow in similar ways, or you might learn something new about what they want for themselves and for your relationship.
